The DSE version adheres closely to the original gameplay and rules, but does incorporate all errata and some minor rule adjustments discovered to be needed after 40 years of gameplay. Also, it provides updated charts, gameplay aids, and more optional rules. What you will really notice, though, are the enlarged map and counters, which aid gameplay.

This game covers World War Two on the Western Front from D-Day to March 1945. One of the game’s big twists is that it allows the Allies to choose where they want to land (including Southern France). However, each landing space has a maximum number of units that can be landed in the initial assault. Additionally, it allows the Germans to organize their defenses (within certain zones) as they like.

After the learning session, we did not have a lot of time for gameplay, but it was an exciting first couple turns. The Allies went with the traditional landing in Normandy. The Germans had aggressively deployed forward into the landing zones. However, clever air mission planning (another interesting mechanic of the game) allowed the Allies to drop some critical bridges and isolate some German panzer divisions on the beach side of the river and be destroyed. The Allies were able to quickly expand their beachhead and get a solid foothold before the remaining German units in the area could react.

We will definitely be back for this game designed for 2 players (though 2 teams have enough to do to play).
