The Games You Want to Play…Clash Of Cultures

Clash of Cultures: Monumental Edition

Chuck (Red / Huns), Dom (Yellow / Aztecs), Doug (Purple / Rome), and Scott G. (Blue / Greeks) worked to build their civilizations and dominate the continent. In addition to the original game, the Monumental Edition includes the Civilizations and Aztecs expansions. One of the nice upgrades is the distinctive civilizations, a few of which have unique starting maps. In addition to those with different maps, each civilization comes with four Advance upgrades that are earned when specific standard Advances are completed. For example, the Roads Advance allows a player to move two spaces (rather than one) for the cost of additional resources, but the Roman bonus allows a player to move units up to four spaces when moving between its cities.

While the Greeks focused on building their civilization and culture, the Aztecs and Huns battled against one another in a brutal back-and-forth – at one point, each of them was in position to attack the other’s capital. The Aztecs managed to assault the Huns’ capital a couple of times, but without success, and their cities had been reduced to just the base cities. The Roman army, which had been facing the Greeks, used the Roman Roads advance to march north quickly and take a couple cities from the Huns. With the war against the Aztecs and the Roman attack, the Huns were knocked down to a single city, but grew it to be one of the largest on the continent (later, they would take a city from some barbarians that appeared nearby). An earthquake destroyed a couple of these cities at one point and the Huns, after repulsing the Aztec’s attack attacked the Romans and won a glorious battle despite being outnumbered. The Huns captured both an Aztec and a Roman leader.

Victory is determined by earning points for a number of factors: City Pieces, Advances, Objectives, Wonders, Events, and Leaders Captured.

Congratulations to Doug for Rome’s victory with 43 points (CP = 8; A = 11; O = 12; W = 4; E = 6; and LC = 2). Scott’s Greeks finished 2nd with 41.5 points (CP = 10; A = 13.5; O = 12; W = 4; E = 2; and LC = 0). Chuck’s Huns finished 3rd with 40.5 points (CP = 10; A= 12.5; O = 12; W = 0; E = 0; and LC = 6) and Dom’s Aztecs finished 4th with 14 points (CP = 3; A= 7; O = 2; W = 0; E = 2; and LC = 0)
